The area and its weather offer many opportunities for youngsters of all ages to hone their physical skills and develop recreational interests that can last a lifetime. All of the familiar organized youth sports soccer, football, T-ball, volleyball, softball and baseball are supported and are readily available to children in all areas of the city. Summer camps, such as those run bymembers of the NBA’s San Antonio Spurs, help children excel.
Tennis
Tennis programs and camps, many run by former top-seeded professionals, abound. In addition to private clubs that provide indoor courts, lessons and league play, the McFarlan Tennis Center, centrally located in San Pedro Park, is a world-class tennis facility open to the public.
Golf
Since golf is played year-round in San Antonio, there are plenty of opportunities for the next Tiger Woods or Annika Sörenstam to develop his or her championship form here. The San Antonio Junior Golf Association is based at the historic Brackenridge Course; the Central Texas Junior Golf Association headquarters is at Sundance Executive Course in New Braunfels.
Skating
Skaters will find the Alamo City a friendly place, whether their platform of choice issteel blades, in-line skates or a board.The Tank Skate Park caters to “extreme” skateboarders, roller bladers and BMXdaredevils by providing an indoor, supervised collection of ramps, tubes and rails. Children interested in figure skating on wheelsor on blades can take professional instruction at a number of local skate centers, including Crystal Palace ice rink. Instructionand league play are also available for roller and ice hockey.
Gymnastics
A number of first-class tumbling and gymnastic schools, camps and private instructors can help a child fulfill his or her dreams whether those dreams are making a cheerleading squad or winning Olympic gold. Programs are tailored for all ages.
Water Sports
Swimming is another popular children’s activity here. Many neighborhoods have swim clubs that sponsor youth teams. The Lone Star Summer Swim League holds meets and all-district competitions in two divisions. There are also several year-round facilities, such as the Virgil T. Blossom Aquatic Center, the YMCA and the Barshop Jewish Community Center, that host lessons, teams and competitions. One of the finest facilities for the serious swimmer is the indoor San Antonio Natatorium located at 1430 W. Durango, (210) 226-8541.
Hunting
As might be expected in South Texas, shooting sports are popular, and participation by properly trained youth is encouraged. Prior to each hunting season, hunter-education classes are held at locations throughout the city. The San Antonio Gun Club, A Place to Shoot Inc. and other shooting ranges in the metropolitan area offer skeet, trap and target classes as well as practice facilities for pistols and rifles. The National Shooting Complex in western Bexar County is the only facility in the state capable of holding major events like the National 4-H Invitational Match and the Texas Shooting Sports Games.
Cycling
Bicyclists mountain or racing can develop their skills and endurance by participating in events scheduled throughout the year. For riders of a more mechanical bent, San Antonio even boasts a school for motorcycle enthusiasts.
