The Dallam/Hartley County area is an excellent place to live with plenty
of jobs, excellent day care, good city services and a friendly atmosphere.
The Dalhart area has a very low unemployment rate - just 2.7 percent
- and a booming economy. The Texas Department of Housing and Commerce
Affairs has interest-free loans up to $10,000 to help folks who meet
certain income eligibility requirements to purchase a home. The median
income for both Dallam and Hartley County has been steadily increasing
in recent years.

The Senior Citizens Center (806-244-8521), the 55-Plus Club and the
Dalhart Area Child Care Center welcome new participants. The Dalhart
Senior Citizens Association, Inc. operates a center at 610 Denrock that
serves as a hub of activity for the 55 and older set.
The Dalhart Area Child Care Center (806-244-5369) is a nonprofit organization
providing innovative child care for the Dalhart area. Its new, 14,000-square-foot
facility next to Dalhart Elementary School allows the center to serve
infants through preschoolers and provide an after-school program for
older "latch key" children.
New Texas residents have 30 days to get a Texas driver's license. Licenses
are available at the Dallam County Courthouse (806-244-6334) at 415
Denrock in Dalhart. This office is open every Tuesday from 9 a.m. to
3:45 p.m. Proof of insurance and a Social Security card must be presented
to renew or to obtain a new license.
All vehicles must be registered in Texas within 30 days. An inspection
is required and can be obtained at most service stations and car dealerships.
Inspection costs vary depending on location, whether the sticker is
valid for one or two years, and whether or not emissions are tested.
A green copy of the inspection sticker must be provided, along with
proof of insurance, to register a vehicle.
Dallam County residents register their vehicles at the Dallam County
Tax Office (806-244-2801) at 412 Denver Avenue in the Courthouse Annex
Building. Hartley County residents register at the Hartley County Precinct
3 Building (806-244-2031) at 701 Texas Boulevard. First-time registration
costs include a $28 title fee and a $90 resident fee. The cost of registering
a vehicle annually varies depending on the age and type of the vehicle.
The registration for a car ranges from $51.80 to $69.80. Pickup trucks,
motor homes and travel trailers are based on weight.
The Dallam County Appraisal District appraises all taxable county property.
The Dallam County tax office and the city of Texline collect their own
ad valorem tax, but the Appraisal District collects all other ad valorem
taxes. The Hartley County Appraisal District appraises Hartley property
and collects their ad valorem taxes. For information about tax-related

Dalhart offers weekly trash pick-up. Specially marked green dumpsters
are available for yard waste and other organic materials. The landfill
operates from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and is closed during the lunch
hour Monday through Friday, and is open Saturdays from 9 a.m. until
1 p.m.
Dogs must be registered through the Dalhart Police Department at 202
Rock Island Ave. Tags need to be renewed annually at a fee of $5. Animals
must also have current immunizations. Dogs are not allowed to run at
large.
A $1 voluntary fee is added to water bills in Dalhart to fund various
citywide projects, including Chamber of Commerce Holiday events like
the 4th of July Celebration and Christmas activities. Funds are also
used for the XIT Parade and "Keep the Shine on Denrock," our
annual downtown block party.
Dalhart has 911 emergency services. After-hours emergencies for water
and sewer, as well as non-emergency police situations, can be reported
