Encore at North Carolina State University

The Encore Center for Lifelong Enrichment offers courses, study trips, special events and other programming for adults 50 and older. Operated through the university’s McKimmon Center for Extension and Continuing Education, all programs are non-credit. Adults over 65 who are interested in taking credit courses may receive a tuition waiver for classes on a space-available basis.

This agency provides information and referrals in areas of interest to seniors, including housing, retirement, health matters, senior enrichment, volunteering, help in the home, employment and money matters, insurance, and senior rights protection. The division operates an ombudsman program to advocate for residents in nursing homes and adult care homes throughout the state.

These annual games are open to anyone age 55 or over. Competition is tiered, with regional winners eligible to participate in state finals in the fall. Athletic competitions, bracketed by age, are offered in 22 individual and team sports.

Resources for Seniors provides services and referrals for Wake County seniors and their caregivers. The primary goal is to help people remain independent and in their own homes for as long as possible. The agency operates total life centers and senior centers in Wake County. It also publishes the Directory of Resources for Older Adults, which provides information on care and counseling, medical facilities, legal assistance, transportation, volunteer and support groups, recreation and leisure activities, and many other services.
