Mozingo Lake Park

The crown jewel of the region’s recreation centers, is the 3,000-acre Mozingo Lake Park. This publicly owned facility includes a 1,000-acre fish stocked lake and offers fishing, boating, water skiing, lake swimming and a beach, hiking trails, sheltered picnic areas, volleyball and basketball courts, a full service RV park, tent camping, youth cabins, outdoor physical fitness and leadership development course facilities and limited game bird hunting. Several of Maryville’s civic organizations have donated time, money and energy to add improvements to the park. It is yet another rallying point for this progressive community.

Bordering the lake’s shores is the 18-hole championship Mozingo Golf Course designed by award-winning course architect Don
Sechrest. The course was nominated for the “Best New Public Golf Course in America” award in 1996 through Golf Digest, the magazine which more recently named the golf course “the best moderately priced golf course in Missouri.”

The clubhouse/pro-shop has a uniquely Midwestern look. Built to resemble a barn, it has an old silo beside it. A driving range, practice putting green and golf-cart rental are other features of the facility.

Maryville Aquatic Center

The Aquatic Center, located in Beal Park, contains a beautiful pool with eight 25-meter swimming lanes, water slides and more than 12,500 square feet of surface water.

The $2 million facility, built with public monies, is nationally noted for its complex architecture including its bathhouse and concession facilities.

The Aquatic Center provides the facilities for the Maryville Sharks Swim Team, a youth swim team that competes with teams from other communities. Swimming lessons are available through the Parks and Recreation Department and the American Red Cross in the summer. The University offers the public access to the indoor Foster Aquatic Center on campus.

Parks & Recreation

The Parks and Recreation Department is a separate entity from the city government and is under the direction of a board of interested citizens. The Department works closely with a not-for-profit foundation, ‘Maryville Friends of the Park,’ which provides donations that are used to enhance and expand park amenities. The Department coordinates a slate of athletic team competition including softball, volleyball, and basketball leagues for adults as well as youth.

Maryville boasts of 11 public parks. Each has its own special characteristics and facilities. Some parks are noted for their picnic shelters, others for their playground equipment, others for their athletic field and courts, and others for their walking trails and one for its serenity and history. The newest park is the Donaldson Westside Park and Sports Complex. This park located west across the street from a University sports complex consists of 40 acres containing four lighted softball fields, five soccer fields, a football field, shelters, playgrounds and amphitheater.

Maryville Recreation Center/National Guard Armory

To be built in 2002, this $2.4 million dollar “joint use facility” will provide Maryville citizens with “under one roof” space for tennis courts, basketball courts, volleyball courts, walking track and fitness/weight room as well as rooms for meetings and card playing.

For a nominal fee, the public may currently use the University’s recreation center and fitness center.

Hunting for water fowl and upland game birds and fishing for bass, crappie, bluegill and catfish are available to the public at three near-by locations: Mozingo Lake, Nodaway County Lake, and the Bilby Lake and Conservation Area. Hunting and fishing at these locations are regulated by the State of Missouri Conservation Department and permits are required.

Mozingo Lake Golf Course

Mozingo Lake Golf Course offers a unique golfing experience. Nestled in the rolling hills of northwest Missouri and situated on the shores of the beautiful 1,000-acre Mozingo Lake, the 18-hole, par 72 course spans 240 acres of lush greens, well-kept fairways and challenging native grass rough and water and sand hazards.

University Facilities & Teams

Many of the Northwest Missouri State University recreation facilities are open to non-students. Public membership at moderate costs to the fitness center, walking track, indoor pool, weight room and gymnasium are available.

For those who wish to cheer, the University’s intercollegiate athletic teams are popular and competitive attractions. The Bearcats have seven men’s varsity sports and eight women’s varsity teams which compete in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) and in NCAA Division II.

Maryville Country Club

While Mozingo Lake Golf Course is the newest golf attraction, the private Maryville Country Club on the west side of town serves many of the community’s residents with a nine-hole golfing facility, swimming and other leisure services including a dining room and bar. Because of its location, the golf course provides an opportunity for golfers with limited time to enjoy a few holes of golf.

The Bearcat Lanes bowling alley, the Hangar’s movies and recreation arcade, and the Hole in One indoor miniature golf course provide additional community resources for recreation.
