A variety of opportunities enhance students’ experience,
reinforcing the core curriculum.
Choices ... pre-kindergarten, nursery and day care options provide preschool
children with their first formal educational experiences.
Parents may choose church-affiliated or other private facilities. The
public school system offers a program for children who might benefit from
additional individual attention before kindergarten.
The Boonville R-1 Public School District serves about 1,500 students in
two elementary buildings, one middle school and one high school. District
teachers and administrators continually strive to improve the quality
of the education they offer.
Because each teacher in the district is responsible for fewer than 20
students, each student receives the individual attention necessary for
an excellent education. The core curriculum in reading, writing, spelling,
language, mathematics, social studies and science challenges students
to master skills at each grade before progressing to a higher level. Fundamentals
at all levels are enhanced by music, physical education and art instruction,
and a variety of learning opportunities reinforce the curriculum. All
Boonville schools participate in the Artists-in-Schools program, sponsored
by the Arts Education Committee of the Friends of Historic Boonville,
in which area artists share their talents, providing students with hands-on
mastery. Disciplinary policies are designed to encourage students to develop
self-control.
Boonville High School maintains an A+ rating from the Missouri Department
of Elementary and Secondary Education. This entitles graduates to attend
a two-year community college tuition-free. The 550-plus BHS students may
obtain college prep instruction or a solid foundation of vocational skills
for immediate entry into the workforce. The curriculum includes foreign
language, fine arts, vocational education and practical arts. The vocational
program includes skills-development training.
Excellence at Boonville High School extends to extracurricular activities
as well. The vocal and instrumental music and sports programs earn solid
support from the community. The Boonville Pirates won the 1998 Missouri
Class 3A football championship. The Boonville High School Academic Bowl
Team were winners of the State Class 3A Division in 2000.
Students in grades six through eight attend the newly renovated Laura
Speed Elliott Middle School. The school recently implemented ZAP (Zeros
Aren’t Permitted) to boost student performance and TAP (Teacher
Advisory Programs) to offer more support to the teachers. This facility
now provides an expanded library, commons, computer labs and other enhancements.
Boonville students, parents, faculty members and area residents now enjoy
a state-of-the-art middle school.
Students in second through fifth grade attend David Barton Elementary
School. The SHARE program (Stay Home and Read Evenings) renewed enthusiasm
for reading in these students.
Central Elementary School provides instruction for students from kindergarten
through first grade. Recently, it focused on family involvement and self
improvement through kindness.
Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic School provides instruction for students
from preschool through eighth grade and offers a full range of extracurricular
activities. This parochial school maintains an atmosphere of human knowledge
enlightened by faith. The school and students thrive with the help of
strong parental support and leadership. Graduates of Sts. Peter and Paul
attend Boonville High School.
Through the Boonville district’s school-business partnership program
for grades K–12, more than 20 businesses send volunteers to work
in the classroom or invite classes to visit their plants and offices for
educational opportunities.
The Boonslick Technical Education Center is another example of the partnership
between business, industry and education. BTEC provides top-quality vocational
training to more than 350 adults and secondary students annually. These
students receive general vocational training or orientation to a specific
industry. By customizing training for area manufacturers, BTEC contributes
to a highly competent workforce.
Boonslick Regional Library/Cooper County supports educational opportunities
within the area. Part of a multi-county library network, it provides access
to more than 130,000 books, a genealogy resource and a full range of other
reference services. They have just installed a state-of-the-art computer
network at the facility. University Outreach and Extension Cooper County
advocates education in an informal setting. Add this resource to the list
for information on questions relating to farm, home, community and environment.
Unlimited Opportunities, Inc., a not-for-profit agency, serves individuals
with disabilities in Cooper and Howard counties. Boonslick Industries,
Inc., a sheltered workshop, was founded in 1976 and has 60 employees with
disabilities. Other programs include a Kiwanis-sponsored Aktion Club and
Developmental Therapy for First Steps, which sponsors a chapter of People
First, with consumer, community, and employment training, an adult day
program, family support services, community living, and individual counseling.
The organization now serves over 130 individuals with disabilities in
the Boonslick Area.
