The Murray-Calloway County Chamber of Commerce is working to make sure our region stays a great place to live, work, raise a family or even retire.

by Aaron W. Hughey

“Murray-Calloway County,” says John Williams, executive vice president of the local Chamber of Commerce, “is one of the fastest-growing communities in the state.”

In addition to being one of Kentucky’s leading tobacco producers, Calloway County is also home to a major regional university and a growing number of businesses and industries.

It is also situated only 15 miles from the 170,000-acre Land Between the Lakes, a recreational area known worldwide for its fishing, boating, swimming, camping, and wildlife population.

“People who live here enjoy a very high quality of life coupled with a relatively low cost-of-living.” Williams explains. “They have much more disposable income than their counterparts in other parts of the country.”

“We have moved up in per capita income over the last ten years,” Williams explains. “In 1990, we were 29th out of 120 counties in the state. In 2000, we had moved up to 19th place.”

“The Murray-Calloway County area has been very successful in attracting retail businesses,” Williams continues. “Because Murray enjoys a low sales tax rate and a prime location in the midst of a four-state area, it has become a popular destination for shoppers throughout the region.”

“The leadership in Murray and Calloway County has always been very proactive,” Williams observes. “We want to be the best in the state — if not the nation — at whatever we undertake.”

“For example, the Murray Main Street Program, which is featured in this magazine, is one of the most successful in the state,” Williams continues. “We strive to always be at the forefront of all of these kinds
of initiatives.”
“Moreover, having a regional university, Murray State University, in our backyard affords residents in this area many benefits,” Williams observes. “In general, we have a more educated workforce and income levels tend to be higher.”

“Culturally, Murray-Calloway County has a tremendous amount to offer,” Williams notes. “Some of our local artists are probably more appreciated in New York than they are around here.”

Murray-Calloway County’s excellent schools, outstanding healthcare facilities, great housing market, low crime rate, and a whole host of recreational, entertainment and cultural activities combine to make this area a wonderful place to live and work.

As you read through the articles in this magazine, please keep in mind that this is only a representative cross-section of what Murray-Calloway County is all about. The people, businesses, educational institutions, as well as the cultural, recreational and entertainment attractions featured here attest to the immense diversity of the region - a diversity that provides something for just about everyone.

So if you are looking for a great place to live, work, raise a family or even retire, please consider Murray-Calloway County.

“We may be just what you’re looking for,” Williams notes.
