Innovative
ideas and good management practices can be found in our local government
units.
Freeport, a city
of nearly 26,000, is the seat of Stephenson County government, thereby
bringing the city administration into close proximity with county officials
to work on issues of mutual interest. Citizens elect a mayor and city
alderman every four years. An elected board oversees the affairs of
Stephenson County.
City officials in Freeport work closely with county officials, as well
as leaders in business and education, to promote and preserve the high
quality of life in the area. The city governments commitment to
the economic vitality of the community is best illustrated by its participation
in and financial support of the Freeport Area Economic Development Foundation.
City leaders also work with the Freeport Area Chamber of Commerce to
help existing business and industry. Joint leadership efforts are responsible
for the citys
successful, five-square-mile Enterprise Zone and the new enterprises
it has drawn to the community.
Innovative ideas and good management practices can be found in our local
government units. Intergovernmental cooperation agreements, such as
those that created the Regional Trails Project, are not uncommon. Partnerships
between people in the public sector and private enterprise represent
promising community improvement initiatives. Some examples of these
include Partners in Planning, Stephenson County 21st Century Healthy
Communities, and the U.S. Department of Justice Weed & Seed designation.
