Skiing

When the snow flies, so do the skiers -- over the slopes, that is. We are fortunate to have two ski centers in our backyard. Both are easy to reach, and lift tickets and season passes at both are reasonably priced.

Sundown Mountain Resort is just minutes west of Dubuque. Twenty runs, a full chairlift and over 475 vertical feet of fun await the novice or the expert. There’s also an exciting new half-pipe area for snowboarders. Beginners lessons, corporate packages and group rates make this an attractive destination for all ages. Sundown has a cozy lodge for snacks and rentals and is very popular with Dubuquers.

In nearby Galena, Ill., another great ski location exists at Chestnut Mountain Resort. Seventeen runs (bunny to black diamond), a diverse-terrain snowboard area and the beautiful chairlift overlooking the Mississippi will entertain guests. Additionally, the resort boasts a 120-room lodge, two restaurants, a cafeteria, an indoor pool and a 20,000 square foot pro shop.
