Worship

If you seek houses of worship on the Eastern Shore of Mobile Bay, you will find more than 100 churches representing the diversity of the South’s religious heritage. More than 20 denominations and faiths comprise a very active religious community. In addition to the traditional Protestant and Catholic churches, our communities include the following: Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Greek Orthodox, First Church of Christ Scientist, Friends Society (Quaker), Bahá’í, Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, Jehovah’s Witness and Tibetan Buddhism.

Take a historic tour of the area’s churches. Visit Daphne’s Little Bethel Baptist Church, which dates back to the mid-1870s, and the old Methodist Church in Daphne, built in 1858 and now a museum with the church’s original pews. Stop in Malbis to see the Greek Orthodox Memorial Church. This extraordinary place of worship, built in 1965, is a replica of a Byzantine church in Athens, Greece, and was constructed by Greek artisans and craftsmen brought to the Eastern Shore.

Legend has it that Native Americans gathered on the bluffs overlooking Mobile Bay for spiritual celebrations. We encourage you to enjoy the sunrise and the sunset on the bay, and perhaps you will feel the profound spiritual connection to the land as well.

Contact the Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce for an updated list of churches with addresses and phone numbers by calling 251-621-8222 or visiting the Web site www.ESChamber.com.
